Traditional broom making, although a lost art in many parts of the world, is still alive and well in Transylvania. We managed to bump into a broom maker, and although she informed us it wasn’t the season for broom making, she told us all about her craft.

Broom making starts from growing a special plant. It is grown in the fields and then harvested. The seeds are fed to pigeons and domestic animals. The plant is dried by heating it in 100 degrees celsius, and then it is ready to make into a broom. Tassels are bundled in preparation for tying. Shorter stalks are used for the inside layers and longer stalks are used for the outside layers to give it a good aspect. The next step is sewing the broom and attaching it to the wooden stick.

She told us it takes up to 20 minutes to make one broom! It is a family business, and she’s been making brooms since 1952!
